RESUMO

This paper plays with the possibilities of writing about psychoanalytic work in different ways with different levels of disclosure about both patient and analyst. Various issues around anonymity, confidentiality, consent and identity are explored, highlighting the many questions that come up. These issues of how to write psychoanalytically are also addressed from the point of view of culture and the sociopolitical gestalt of our time.

RESUMO

An alternative to Mahler's separation-individuation model of child development is presented to explain differences in the development and experience of a sense of self in Indian culture and other cultures where the Western sense of individual selfhood is not seen as the goal of maturity and adulthood. In the absence of such a formulation, called here integrative individuation, the familial and relational experience of people from non-Western cultures is often misunderstood and pathologized by clinicians. Features of this non-Western sense of self include looser boundaries, different relational priorities, and greater tolerance regarding personal space. Though these differences have been commented on by scholars, a detailed developmental model has not previously been formulated.

RESUMO

While there is a long history to the acquaintance between psychoanalysis and India, psychoanalytic thought has never quite taken hold in Indian culture. However, due to economic globalization, the boom in digital technologies, and the consequent increase in interactions between the East and West, it is becoming increasingly necessary to take notice of the cultural dimensions of psychological experience and its place in psychoanalytic theory and practice. This article explores how the experience of participating in a psychoanalytically oriented treatment structure may be shaped by Indian culture. Developmental, social, clinical, and technical perspectives are considered in each instance.
